| Overview
The word ‘plant' encompasses a wide range of living organisms, all of which belong to the kingdom Plantae and share a range of characteristics. There are about 300 thousand known species of plants. Due to the fact that plants adapt well to almost any climate, scientists needed a way to organize the different species. There's a system of classification for plants just as there is a system of classification fo animals. Green plants are special because they are able to make their own food through the process of photosynthesis. Common Plant CharacteristicsWhat do plants have in common? As stated earlier all green plants can make their own food through the process of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is a biochemical process that connects plants. Photosynthesis can be defined as the process by which green plants make their own food is the presence of sunlight, the plants uses the energy from the Sun with the carbon dioxide from the air and water to create sugar molecules and oxygen. As with all of biology, there are exceptions to the rule and you will learn that not all plants survive through photosynthesis. Some plant species are parasites.
